The Time Mom Said She Was Fine

August 6, 2026 · 3 min read

She said she was fine.

That's what she always said. On the phone, Sunday evenings, her voice carried the same tone it had for thirty years. I'm fine, sweetheart. Don't worry about me.

So we didn't worry. Not really. We were busy: work, kids, life moving fast. We called every week, visited for the holidays, and in between, we told ourselves everything was fine, because she'd told us so.

Then one day, you notice. Mail piling up on the table. The same shirt worn three times that week. A pot left on the stove, still warm. Nothing dramatic on its own. But put together, it tells a different story than the one she'd been telling you on the phone.

That's when the guilt sets in. How did I not see this sooner? Should I have been there more? Did I let her down?

You didn't let her down. You did what every child of an aging parent does: you believed what you were told, because you wanted to believe it, and because our parents, especially the ones who gave everything to raise us, never wanted to be a burden. They spent their whole lives taking care of us. Asking for help doesn't come naturally to them.

That's exactly the moment MCV exists for.

Not to replace family. Nothing replaces family. But to be the extra presence that lets your mother, your father, your grandmother, stay home, in their house, with their memories, their plants, their favourite chair, while someone quietly makes sure things really are okay. Not just on the phone.

We're a small agency, founded right here in East Montreal, by people who come from this community and know it. We speak Creole, French, and English, because our families do too, and being understood in your own language, when you're vulnerable, isn't a small thing. It's everything. Our team doesn't just show up with skills; they show up with respect for the dignity of the person in front of them.

If you're reading this because a doubt has crept in, because your parent told you they're fine, but some small voice is telling you to check anyway, trust that voice.

We'd be glad to go check, with you. No pressure, no obligation. Just a conversation, to understand what's really going on, and figure out together what would actually help.

Because "I'm fine" sometimes deserves a closer look.
